The fallout from artificial intelligence-generated nude photos of private school girls continues, and parents say it will continue Monday as their daughters stay home from school.
Two days after Upper School students staged a walk-out at Lancaster Country Day, parents of student victims met Sunday to discuss what they say school administrators need to do before their children return. All of this is in reaction to the schoolâs handling of AI-generated deepfake photos using the faces of underage female students.
More than 200 students â most of the upper school â and some faculty members walked out of classes Friday morning. On Sunday, three dozen parents of the female victims met.
In a letter addressed to WGAL, they said while the head of Upper School, Jenny Gabriel, left her position Friday, others at the school should also be held accountable.
The letter is critical of Head of School Matt Micciche and the board of trustees for being slow to react to a Safe2Say tip last November and parents' requests for counseling for their daughters in June. The letter also refers to an email parents say Micciche sent to them Friday explaining a different type of school day Monday as a result of the student walk-out.
"There will be multiple counselors available to students to visit as needed throughout the day. Weâll also have a series of activities that provide opportunities for community-building and fun," Micciche said in the email.
The parents offered a sharp retort in their letter, saying, "The 50 plus victims are not asking for a day of community building and fun. There is nothing fun about child sexual abuse material."
The letter goes on to say, "To the brave victims, students and dedicated teachers that make LCDS what it is, parents see you, they hear you, and they will do what is right to protect you. Senior administration and the president of the board must be held accountable."
Lancaster Country Day has enlisted the help of the crisis management firm Summer Strategies. Parents of the student victims say they've hired catastrophic injury lawyers at Kline & Specter. The parents say their children and many others will not be attending school until they feel safe there.
Parents wrote a letter Sunday and emailed it to News 8âs Meredith Jorgensen, who has been working on this story for months as part of an 8 On Your Side Investigation.
The letter allows the parents to share their frustrations and concerns with the school's conduct without identifying any individual parents, which would identify their children, who are alleged victims of child sexual material.
You can read the full letter sent to WGAL below.
"Dear WGAL - please know, we are the parents of underage females that are victims of child sexual abuse material. We must remain confidential in order to protect the identity of our girls throughout this investigation. Detective Laurel Bair of Susquehannah Regional Police Department should be commended for her dedication and hardwork in protecting our children.
"In lieu of holding mandated reporters accountable, senior administration at LCDS is more concerned with spending school money on damage control via high-end 'outside consultants for the school' and attorneys. And by schools money, we are referring to money parents pay for their child(ren) to be educated and protected.
"Previous Head of Upper School, Jenny Gabriel's, last day was this past Friday. While mistakes were made, these same mistakes were made by others. We are looking at you, Head of School, Assistant Head of School and Board of Trustees.
"At the beginning of June parents emailed Matt Micciche and the Board of Trustees asking for third-party professional counseling help for the victims and nothing was done. Now that our brave students are standing up and demanding to be heard, a year after the Safe2Say tip was first called into LCDS, Micciche writes in an email to parents this past Friday explaining Monday's planned activities, 'There will be multiple counselors available to students to visit as needed throughout the day. Weâll also have a series of activities that provide opportunities for community-building and fun...'
"The 50 plus victims are not asking for a day of community building and fun. There is nothing fun about child sexual abuse material.Students compiled a list of eight demands before walking out of school at 11:15am on Friday. The students are asking for change so that they feel safe around the adults that are caring for them.
"On August 28th, Micciche wrote in an email to parents, 'The school also received a request for a comment from WGAL. We have made the decision not to engage with any media outlets in any way regarding this incident.'
"My how the tides have changed, and not for the better. Thank you expensive outside consultants, but the 50 plus victims are waiting to be heard.
"To the brave victims, students and dedicated teachers that make LCDS what it is, parents see you, they hear you, and they will do what is right to protect you. Senior administration and the President of the Board must be held accountable."
