The school committee last night approved an Artificial Intelligence policy that was developed using model language recently issued by the Massachusetts Association of School Committees.
“The policy is part of a broader policy framework and is cross-referenced with policies related to technology and digital resources and the district’s student handbooks,” newly elected School Committee Chair Jen Benham told the Hingham Anchor in response to a follow-up email.
The approved policy states that the Hingham School Committee acknowledges the growing influence of Artificial Intelligence in education, and that the Hingham Public School District “is committed to preparing our students for their futures. Therefore, it is essential for our students to develop fluency in digital technologies and critical thinking skills while also honoring their commitment to academic integrity.”
As part of the approval of the AI policy, the school committee will direct the HPS administration to develop procedures in line with current district policy and state and federal laws regarding the protection of students’ information. Such regulations will be reviewed regularly and revised as needed.
The new committee leadership was decided at an earlier meeting, during which Benham was appointed chair, Michelle Ayer as vice chair, and Alyson Anderson as secretary.
The committee also welcomed John Mooney — the newest committee member following the recent town election.
“I’m honored to step into the role of chair and remain committed to thoughtful, steady leadership as we continue working together to support the students, educators, and schools,” Benham said.
This week’s meeting took place at Foster School following a heartfelt dedication of the new school library in honor of the late former HPS METCO Coordinator Camilla Roundtree.
