ANZ’s new chief executive Nuno Matos has made his first major hire by luring a senior Santander banker amid a frenetic period of hiring and poaching at the very top of the country’s major banks.

The looming appointment of Stephen White as an ANZ group executive and head of operations comes after Westpac hired Andrew McMullan from the Commonwealth Bank as its data, digital and artificial intelligence chief, the third time the bank has poached from rivals in as many months.
