Intel Plans to Replace Its Marketing Employees With AI

Artists, game developers, software developers, translators – the wave of AI-driven layoffs shows no signs of stopping, this time affecting marketing specialists. According to Intel's internal notice, it plans to outsource its marketing tasks to consulting firm Accenture and its artificial intelligence technologies, with the tech giant's flesh-and-blood marketing workers set to get the short end of the stick and face mass terminations in the near future.

According to a memo sent to Intel employees and obtained by OregonLive, the company plans to partner with a third-party consulting firm to "leverage AI-driven technologies" in order to "[move] faster, [simplify] processes, and [reflect] best practices, while also managing our spending."

As a result, a number of employees can expect to receive an unpleasant termination letter from HR, with Intel saying it will inform most marketing workers by July 11 whether they'll be fired or not. "The transition of our marketing and operations functions will result in significant changes to team structures, including potential headcount reductions, with only lean teams remaining," the internal announcement reads.

As if just getting let go wasn't enough, the report mentions that there's a possibility that affected workers may have to train their own replacements at Accenture to assist in educating Intel's new contractors "during the transition process." "AI can help us analyze large amounts of information faster, automate routine tasks, personalize customer experiences, and make smarter business decisions," Intel proclaimed in the memo.

When contacted by OregonLive – the same outlet that previously broke the news on Intel planning to cut 15% to 20% of its factory workers – the company confirmed its new partnership with Accenture but declined to comment on the layoffs or how many employees will be affected.

"As we announced earlier this year, we are taking steps to become a leaner, faster, and more efficient company. As part of this, we are focused on modernizing our digital capabilities to serve our customers better and strengthen our brand. Accenture is a longtime partner and trusted leader in these areas, and we look forward to expanding our work together," the tech giant said in a statement.

The fired marketing specialists appear to be part of Intel's previously announced mass layoffs – first reported by Bloomberg and later confirmed in the company's official statement – as part of which, Intel plans to reduce its workforce by around 20%, impacting 21,000 to 22,000 employees across all departments. So far, however, new CEO Lip-Bu Tan's cost-cutting strategy has shown little impact, with the company's stock remaining largely flat since he took over in March.
