The AI boom means record sales for Micron and good timing for Central NY
Micron Technology is riding the crest of the artificial intelligence boom just as the company prepares to break ground on a massive chipmaking complex in Central New York. Micron, for now the only U.S. maker of memory chips crucial to artificial intelligence, cell phones and other technology on which modern life depends, has posted record sales in the past few quarters. Its stock price has soared more than 40% in 2025. And it started producing high bandwidth chips early last year for Nvidia, the world’s most valuable company and the leader in the artificial intelligence race.

Syracuse football head coach Fran Brown said that he tabbed Steve Angeli the Orange’s starting quarterback because he believes the Notre Dame transfer held advantages over Rickie Collins in how to “run the operation” and in game experience. “I mean it was extremely hard,” Brown said. “I was up a long time just trying to figure this out. It would have been easier if it had been a no-brainer but it was a complete battle. ... It was tough for us the entire time, going back and forth to see what was best.”

Police officers saved two residents from a massive fire that broke out in a Baldwinsville apartment building in January. It took fire crews nine hours to put out the fire that caused the roof of the building to cave in. The officers, who were honored by the Onondaga County District Attorney’s Office and their own department for saving the man and woman, recently talked with syracuse.com about that night. This story is also based on body camera videos from that night.
NY legislator jumps into race to unseat US Rep. John Mannion in 2026
A Republican state lawmaker who retired from the Army to become a farmer plans to launch a campaign to unseat Rep. John Mannion in the 22nd Congressional District. Assemblyman John Lemondes told syracuse.com that he will seek election to the House seat next year rather than make a bid for a fourth term in the 126th Assembly District. Lemondes is a strong supporter of President Donald Trump and his policies.
How a man jumped into the frigid Oswego River to save a stranger sinking in a car
An Oswego man was getting home from work when his wife told him a car just went into the nearby river. Joshua R. Blackwell dropped his stuff and ran toward the Oswego River. He went down a steep embankment and jumped into the water with his work clothes on. He saw the car sink and he knew the driver was trapped. What Blackwell did next saved the man who, according to troopers, crashed into a guardrail on Route 46, plunged down a steep embankment, and ended up in the river beneath the Hinmansville Bridge in Schroeppel.
