Buffalo Sabres deploy new AI security system ahead of 2025-26 season

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Before the puck drops, you will have to enter KeyBank Center for a Buffalo Sabres game.

Expect a more advanced entry screening and it is faster.

"The big difference is, you don't have to take things out of your pocket. So you walk in now. through the new Evolve system. You walk in at a normal pace, you don't need to take your phone out of your pocket or anything else. There's no putting your things in a tray," said Stan Makowski, vice president of arena operations.

He said  if the system detects a concern, you will be asked to go through a secondary screening.  Evolv ExpressÒ is an advanced sensor technology and AI detects concealed threats and identifies the person and location of a potential threat.

Makowski says there are nine units in the arena. They are located at every entrance.

The security system will be used for all arena events, not just hockey games.

"In most sporting events that last 10-15 minutes before the event, it gets really crowded, that's when most people want to come in and things can get a little backed up. So this will really help with that. Again, it's a much, much more streamlined process. "

Makowski said Evolv meets NHL standards and is Safety Act design approved.

The Sabres and arena staff are excited about this security upgrade. 

"We get fan feedback, and we try to act on it whenever we can. We think this will really improve the guest experience," Makowski said.
