University of Wyoming Director of Institutional Communications Chad Baldwin said UW’s strategic efforts to lead in artificial intelligence innovation will receive a significant boost, thanks to $6.25 million in commitments from donors and industry, matched by $2.5 million in state funds, for a total of $8.75 million.

The university reports it has secured the private commitments from companies and foundations for sponsored research projects, which triggered the state matching funds.

Baldwin said AI is now a developing field in every major industry and UW’s AI Initiative is intended to guide the future of Wyoming and beyond, empowering citizens and communities to thrive in an AI-driven world.

UW has been advancing its AI expertise through several opportunities and collaborations. Those include launching the School of Computing, supporting strategic faculty hires in AI research, receiving nearly $4 million from the National Science Foundation to acquire state-of-the-art computing infrastructure, and collaborating with the University of Utah to develop a joint AI and rural health care partnership.

According to UW, expected outcomes from the AI Initiative include increased enrollment at UW, enhanced AI literacy among students and K-12 schools, assistance to Wyoming businesses applying AI in their operations, and additional revenues for UW through federal and private grants and industry partnerships.
