The University of Toledo and The Blade will present a panel discussion on artificial intelligence on Wednesday, Oct. 15, continuing the thought leadership series Perspectives.

UToledo’s Dr. William McCreary will join four national panelists who will examine both the optimism and concern surrounding artificial intelligence in “Perspectives: The Impact and Implications of Artificial Intelligence” at 6 p.m. in UToledo’s Doermann Theatre.

The graphic includes UToledo and Blade logos. The panel will be moderated by David Shribman, a Pulitzer Prize-winning, nationally syndicated columnist and executive editor emeritus of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Panelists are:

•  Jeremy Gilbert, who explores how new tools and techniques, including artificial intelligence, affect media as the Knight Chair in Digital Media Strategy at Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism.

•  Dr. William McCreary, who oversees advances in artificial intelligence through partnerships and other initiatives as chief information officer and chief technology officer at UToledo.

•  Dr. Jason Opal, who brings a passion for interdisciplinary collaboration, especially projects involving artificial intelligence, to his role as dean and director of the Ohio State University at Mansfield.

•  Dr. Christopher Warren, who uses machine learning and artificial intelligence to investigate the history of the free press and social networks as a professor of English at Carnegie Mellon University.

•  Dr. Michael Whitfield, who uses genomic and computational approaches to identify the molecular basis of autoimmunity as a professor and chair of the Department of Biomedical Data Science at Dartmouth College’s Geisel School of Medicine.

Perspectives, launched by UToledo and The Blade in 2024, is a series of events in which national panelists discuss a variety of topics alongside UToledo experts.

This month’s event is part of a slate of campus activities leading up to the inauguration of Dr. James Holloway as the 19th president of UToledo at 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, in Savage Arena.

“The Perspectives series has become a valuable opportunity for the community to engage with UToledo,” Holloway said. “Artificial intelligence is a timely and thought-provoking topic with implications for our daily lives that we’re only beginning to understand. I’m looking forward to hearing the perspectives of our panelists.”

Attendees are asked to register for the free, public event online through The Blade. Event parking is free in Area 1N.
