Boise State is now offering a four year degree in AI Science, starting fall of 2025. It's the first program like this in the Northwest.
BOISE, Idaho — Boise State University will launch a four-year artificial intelligence science degree program, becoming one of the first universities in the country and the first in Idaho to offer a bachelor's degree fully centered on AI.
The program launches in fall 2025.
"Boise State has been on the forefront of AI development for a long time," said Jerry Fails, computer science department chair. "This is exactly what we want them to learn."
The AI science program was designed in collaboration with industry representatives to meet employer needs, Fails said. Eight professors will teach students how AI models work and how to evaluate their trustworthiness.
Associate Professor Casey Kennington, who will teach some of the classes, said the program goes beyond using existing AI tools.
"It's not just here's ChatGPT," Kennington said. "It's more like here's how you can make your own language model from scratch."
Students will learn to create AI systems rather than simply use them, focusing on the science behind artificial intelligence development and implementation.
Graduates with a Bachelor of Science in AI will be prepared for data science and artificial intelligence roles in Idaho and beyond, Kennington said.
The program reflects Boise State's commitment to innovation, Fails said, describing it as "blue turf thinking" that challenges conventional approaches to education.
"We don't just accept things as they are," Fails said. "Boise State has been recognized nationally as an innovative university."
University officials said the program positions Boise State on the national stage in AI education as demand for skilled professionals continues to grow across industries.
